September is Māori language month!

With September just around the corner, Te Wiki o te Reo Māori and Mahuru Māori are fast approaching. Te Wiki o te Reo Māori - also known as Māori Language Week - is a government-sponsored initiative to promote and celebrate the Māori language, and has been taking place every year since 1975. In 2019 the celebrations will run 9-15 September.

Mahuru Māori literally means “Māori September” and is a recent undertaking proposed by Paraone Gloyne in 2014. The challenge of Mahuru Māori is to commit to speaking and communicating in te reo Māori (the Māori language) for the whole month of September.

Even if you’re not ready to commit to speaking Māori for a whole month, September is a great time to hear te reo Māori being spoken and to pick up some new skills. Many new Māori language resources are released each year in conjunction with Te Wiki o te Reo Māori to help speakers - and beginners especially - to kōrero Māori (speak Māori).
